| #2586 | Report: IAICC & Blender Conference 2025 Shenzhen | |
| #2587 | I have been invited to take part in the IAICC↗ (which stands for International Artificial Intelligence and Creativity Conference) & Blender Conference this year again, it was a very cool event, this time we have a lot more attendees and a lot of versatility in the people who come here. I think this event could become a thing for Blender heads in Asian regions. Talks and DemonstrationsThe event is like half Blender, half AI. There are a lot of talks of how people used either of them in production environment. Very interesting to see different usages of AI that I haven't thought of previously, also in a teaching context, where for students who wants to make animations, they can use AI to generate a lot of assets and help with the render&composition while themselves can focus on storytelling. A lot of studios around the world are presenting. This includes the Flow team as well. I'm especially impressed with the work from the South African vfx studio as well. The main organizer of this event (Raymond) was a very ambitious person, they would love to spread the power of computer graphics and storytelling in the entire Asia region. They have also announced a global collaborative feature animation project that's based on a certain Chinese historical topic but re-imagined. The aim is to have a lot of students and vfx people to work on parts of the story, then it will become some collected animated series. In the process there will also be AI involved. Personally I don't really fancy the AI look, it remains to be seen what people would come up with in the end. I was there to present a intro to Blender development. Since there are a lot of students, so I didn't go into too much technical detail, but just used my experiences and examples to hopefully inspire younger audiences and serve as an encouragement for them to dig deeper to solve their issues. | |
| #2588 | University VisitWe visited Shenzhen Polytechnic University and took a look at their VFX department, where we saw student works and their overall equipment/infrastructure situation. Later Olivier and the Flow team did some Blender talks with the students there. It was pretty cool, though translations could use some improvements lol. Maybe they will offer teaching positions for people who wanted to become instructors in a in-person situation and that might be interesting. We also visited RayVision computing service provider, traditionally they just do render farm, nowadays they also do on-cloud AI stuff like super-resolution or frame interpolation (There was a director who asked about the unnaturalness of interpolated frames but I don't think the render farm guys got the idea, which is funny), and they have services for like game streaming, remote workstation, high bandwidth syncing etc. Not something I personally would use anyway, but it's fun to visit these places. | |
| #2589 | In Other News...I met up with some old friends who's either in VFX or gaming industry. A lot of interesting discussions there. Old traditional VFX industry is not doing very well here (I guess probably it's the same everywhere), and some of our friends wanted to move to making games, likely in a small studio, which can bring more expressive storytelling, and also a smaller team can mean everyone felt that the project "belong to them" instead of feeling like a cog in a wheel. This mentality has been stronger overall compared to the previous year. Looking forward to see how this would turn out. I finally visited Huaqiangbei electronics market again! Last time it's like 7 or 8 years ago. The place is more organized now, and when I check those consumer devices and OEMs, those have even better services for packaging design and marketing overseas. And guess how much these "Dyson" hairdryers cost :D (15$ and 9$ each, and they now have their own brand with original designs, which costs like 20$ for a whole set, all the same control logic and same turbine blower) Also... Some people may already know that I was doing a 3d print project on the side which is this prop gun I designed, the 3d print was finished when I was in Shenzhen, now I got it back, and it was Awesome, just need to spend some time spray paint it and assemble and do electronics and programming the RP2040 and etc etc... It's close to 10kg because I was dumb and didn't save enough materials, but at least it's sturdy. Mentin suggested that I should post this to Blender Artists forum, maybe I'll do it this weekend, because I still got a ton of work stuff on Blender side needs to be finished lol. BTW this was the project that prompted a potential mesh CAD research that I also brought up to Francisco in Shenzhen Briefly. So far don't have time to go deeper tho. Maybe I'll do something with it next year. AND writing papers? hummmm... | |
